The world of golf equipment is full of exciting gear that doesn’t always fit neatly into our Most Wanted Tests or Buyer’s Guides. But that doesn’t mean you don’t want to know how well it performs. In our We Tried It series, we put different products to the test and share whether they live up to the hype.
What We Tested
Today, we’re reviewing the adidas CODECHAOS 22 BOA Golf Shoe—the version equipped with the BOA Fit System, making it a spikeless option that promises top-tier performance. And yes, we can confirm, without a doubt, that this shoe is completely spikeless.

About the adidas CODECHAOS
The adidas CODECHAOS has earned its place as the brand’s flagship spikeless golf shoe. A consistent top performer and multiple-time winner in our annual Most Wanted spikeless golf shoe tests, it’s widely regarded as one of the best options on the market. After years of writing about it on my own site, I finally decided to give it a try.
Key Features of the CODECHAOS 22 BOA
• Micro-Adjustable Fit – The BOA Fit System ensures a secure and customized fit.
• BOOST Foam – adidas’s proprietary cushioning technology delivers comfort and high energy return.
• Sustainable Materials – The upper contains at least 50% recycled plastic waste.
• Spikeless Traction – The Twist Grip outsole combined with Gripmore rubber enhances stability during swings.
• Molded EVA Sockliner – Included for those who appreciate additional in-shoe comfort.
The BOA model is available in three colorways, while the lace-up version offers seven. As of now, the BOA model retails for $200, whereas the standard version has dropped to $128 from its original $160.
Style and Design
I usually avoid diving into style discussions, but after reviewing several golf shoes, I’ve realized it’s inevitable. So, let’s get into it.
Like many high-tech BOA designs, the CODECHAOS 22 BOA features an exaggerated wrap-around flap, which I suspect contributes to some people’s dislike of BOA-enabled shoes. While its aesthetics may not appeal to everyone, the flap is integral to the BOA Fit System, ensuring an even, secure fit.
Think of it like this: BOA works like a properly worn belt, while traditional laces are more like a belt threaded through just the front loops of your pants—hardly functional or stylish.
Unlike most BOA shoes, this model includes a secondary zipper closure over the flap, giving it a sleeker look—though it still might not appeal to all golfers. If you prefer a more relaxed appearance, you can leave the zipper undone and slightly loosen the BOA fit. Sure, it might look a little unconventional, but I know someone who wears unlaced Louis Vuitton Jordan knockoffs, so who’s judging?
As with most BOA models, colorway options are more limited. While I personally like the black-on-black version of the standard design, I find the Cloud White/Crew Navy/Crystal White combination suitable. However, many would likely prefer the all-white version available only with laces. adidas, there’s no rule saying BOA colorways must be different—no need to overcomplicate things. (FootJoy, take note.)
The BOA Fit System
The adidas CODECHAOS 22 BOA utilizes BOA’s L6 dial with a TX4 textile lace, ensuring a low-profile, micro-adjustable fit. Unlike the Li2 dial found in the Tour360 22 BOA, the L6 doesn’t allow turn-to-loosen functionality.
Some golfers complain about BOA shoes needing periodic tightening throughout a round. While I’ve experienced this before, I didn’t have any such issues with the CODECHAOS. Why? I have no idea.
Fit and Comfort
Neither the BOA nor lace-up version is available in wide sizes, so I can’t accuse adidas of favoring laces. Compared to the previously reviewed adidas Tour360 22 BOA, the CODECHAOS 22 BOA feels slightly roomier but still doesn’t offer the full comfort of a true wide fit.
For me, it’s a better overall fit. Though the heel cup isn’t perfect, it doesn’t feel like I’m wearing a shoe molded for someone else’s foot, which was my experience with the Tour360.
This is only my second time testing BOOST foam, and I’m definitely a fan. It’s plush yet supportive—unlike overly soft designs that compromise stability.
That said, not everyone wants a spikeless shoe to feel like a golf shoe. Personally, I do. I want my spikeless golf shoes to perform like actual golf shoes, not just sneakers with better grip.
During testing, I carried a backup pair just in case. Around the 13th hole, I considered swapping them in due to slight discomfort (mainly in the heel of my slightly larger right foot), but the discomfort eased, and I haven’t had any issues since.
While I generally dislike shoes that require a break-in period, needing just over half a round isn’t bad. Golfers who typically wear standard-width shoes likely won’t experience any problems.
Traction Performance
Let’s be honest—if you swing aggressively (as I do), no spikeless shoe can match the grip of a spiked one. That’s likely why most professional golfers still wear spiked models.
In dry conditions, traction was solid—I never felt like I was slipping. However, wet conditions were another story. On a scale from A to F, I’d rate the wet traction as a generous C-. Slipping, especially when using a driver, was noticeable.
On the bright side, despite a 15-minute downpour, my feet stayed completely dry. The shoe’s waterproofing earns an A+.
Final Thoughts: adidas CODECHAOS 22 BOA
The adidas CODECHAOS 22 BOA is my favorite spikeless golf shoe of 2022. That said, I’m not a huge spikeless shoe guy, and living in Saratoga, N.Y., I don’t get to test as many shoes as I’d like.
While the lack of wide sizes may be a drawback for some, the fit is roomy enough for me to make it work. If you have truly wide feet, you may need to look elsewhere.
Unlike some spikeless shoes designed for casual wear, the CODECHAOS is built specifically for golf. With features like a zippered closure, it’s clear this isn’t meant to be an everyday sneaker that just happens to work on the course.
For those seeking a dedicated golf shoe with a modern look and strong performance, the CODECHAOS 22 BOA is a great choice. However, if casual streetwear vibes are your priority, this may not be the shoe for you.
